Ath: Ross sets PB at Olympics but fails to progress

Sprinter JOHN ROSS has set a new personal best in the 100 metres in an otherwise disappointing
night for Australians in the Olympics track and field.

Every Australian in competition failed to progress to their next round.

West Australian KYLIE WHEELER has finished in 18th place in the heptathlon after climbing
to seventh with two events to go.

ROSS, who only seriously started in the sport seven months ago, has continued his extraordinary
rise after knocking two hundredths of a second off his previous best mark.

But his time of 10.22 seconds was too slow to earn him a place in the semi-finals.

American SHAWN CRAWFORD set the fastest time in the second round of the 100 metres
with 9.89 seconds.

ROSS has finished 19th at his first Olympic Games.
